How to use search filters

Overview of search filters

Document filters help you narrow down documents in our document library. They do not apply to webpages.

You can filter documents by:

This can make it easier to find the exact document(s) you’re looking for.

Each filter works by matching tags that are added to documents when they’re uploaded. These tags follow clear rules so results stay consistent and accurate.

Document filter options

The following filter options apply to documents only:

Tells you what the document is about.

  • Animal custody appeal
    Appeals about animals seized under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act
  • BCFIRB governance
    Documents about how BCFIRB itself operates
  • Farm practices complaint
    Complaints about disturbances from farm operations
  • General oversight
    Routine oversight activities that don’t fall under an appeal or named supervisory review
  • PARP
    Documents related to the Public Accountability and Reporting Program
  • Supervisory review
    Documents connected to a lengthy supervisory review process led by BCFIRB
  • Regulated marketing appeal
    Appeals of decisions made by marketing boards or commissions

Describes the format or purpose of the document.

  • Decision
    A formal ruling by BCFIRB
  • Correspondence from BCFIRB
    Letters, emails or memos we send, such as to commodity boards or commissions
  • Submission to BCFIRB
    Proposals, letters, feedback, or reports we receive
  • Report or plan
    Used for studies, reports, strategic plans, and annual updates
  • Process guidance
    How-to documents, guides, and forms
  • Policy or standard
    Official rules or procedures
  • Reference
    Other supporting documents (like charts or job descriptions)

Shows which regulated sector the document applies to, if any.

  • Broiler hatching egg

Only used for decisions. Show what happened from the point of view of the person who made the request.

  • Approved
    The appeal, complaint, or request succeeded
  • Partially approved
    Some parts of the request were accepted, but not all
  • Denied / dismissed
    The appeal, complaint, or request did not succeed
  • Withdrawn
    The original requestor chose to end the process before a decision
  • Deferred
    BCFIRB chose to delay making a final decision
  • Adjourned
    The process was paused without a final decision

Tips for using filters in your search

Always click ‘Apply filters

After adding or removing filters, click Apply filters to update your search.

Filters stay active

Your filters will stay on, even if you change your keyword.

To see everything in a filtered category

Leave the search box empty and select one or more filters.

Example: To see all decisions, add the filter “Type: Decision” and leave the search box blank.

To search by date

Enter the date as a keyword like this: YYYY-MM-DD

Example: To find documents from January 25, 2025, enter the keyword: 2025-01-25

Choose what you want to search

Use the All | Page | Document filter to show:

  • All results
  • Only webpages
  • Only documents
Using keywords

Keywords help you find information on webpages or in document titles, descriptions, or listed details. The search does not look inside PDFs and will only find exact matches, not synonyms or spelling mistakes.
