Principles-based regulation
BCFIRB uses principles-based regulation (PBR) to oversee regulated agricultural boards and commissions.
- PBR focuses on outcomes rather than prescriptive rules, defining what must be achieved, not how to achieve it
- Boards and commissions have flexibility in how they meet their responsibilities but must show accountability and alignment with the public interest
SAFETI principles
BCFIRB and the regulated marketing boards and commissions must follow the SAFETI principles in all aspects of their work. BCFIRB’s oversight is also guided by the SAFETI principles.
These six principles support fair, transparent, and results-based regulation:
How SAFETI principles are applied
Boards and commissions must demonstrate how they meet each SAFETI principle when they:
- Make decisions
- Manage risks
- Carry out responsibilities
BCFIRB also uses these principles to assess board performance.
