Governance is the way an organization sets rules, makes decisions and holds itself accountable.
The B.C. Farm Industry Review Board (BCFIRB) promotes good governance and transparency across B.C.’s regulated marketing system. We work with regulated marketing boards and commissions to help them govern effectively, meet public expectations and make fair, evidence-based decisions.

How we support good governance
BCFIRB helps ensure that regulated marketing boards and commissions operate with integrity, fairness and strategic purpose. We do this by:
- Issuing policy directions, approvals, and correspondence to clarify expectations and provide oversight
- Conducting supervisory reviews to assess governance practices or address systemic issues
- Assessing board and commission governance and decision-making using the SAFETI principles and accountability framework
- Supporting continuous improvement through guidance, dialogue, and sector collaboration
Boards and commissions are expected to follow fair and transparent processes and make inclusive, evidence-based decisions in the public interest.
Accountability tools and frameworks
BCFIRB uses several tools to ensure ethical behaviour, transparency, and good decision-making.
External oversight and accountability
Several external bodies help to ensure BCFIRB processes follow the law and best practices:
- The B.C. Supreme Court, which can review BCFIRB decisions
- The B.C. Ombudsperson, who ensures administrative fairness
These external oversight processes help ensure transparency and protect public trust.
