Board and commission appointments

The merit-based process is overseen by the Crown Agencies and Board Resourcing Office (CABRO), with support from BCFIRB.

You can apply for appointment in one of two ways:

BCFIRB appointments

What BCFIRB members do

BCFIRB board members act as independent decision-makers. They conduct hearings, oversee regulated marketing board and commission performance, and support public-interest governance in agriculture.

Required skills

Candidates must have:

  • Proven leadership, communication and analytical skills
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and interests
  • Strong conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to make fair, timely decisions using balanced judgment
  • No interests that conflict with statutory duties
  • Willingness to travel and work remotely

Required experience

Candidates should have experience in at least one of these areas:

  • Agriculture, agri-food or aquaculture (production, marketing or processing)
  • Consumer or community representation
  • Land use planning
  • Animal welfare
  • Regulatory or quasi-judicial environments

At least one appointee must have administrative law experience. To be appointed chair, you must have senior-level experience in agriculture, agri-food or aquaculture.

How BCFIRB members are paid

Elected and appointed members

Most board members are elected by producers in B.C.

Cabinet appoints:

  • The Chair of each board and commission
  • Two members of the B.C. Chicken Marketing Board

Some boards also include appointed non-producer members. Depending on the board’s legislation, these appointments may be made by an industry committee or by the board itself, with support from BCFIRB:

Appoints a non-producer directly

B.C. Vegetable Marketing Commission

Appoints two non-producer members through a merit-based process

B.C. Milk Marketing Board

An industry committee named in its regulations appoints one non-producer member

Required qualifications for the Chair

To be appointed Chair of a marketing board or commission, candidates must have:

  • Senior-level experience in agriculture, marketing, or processing in industry or government
  • Organizational, management, negotiation, conflict resolution and decision-making skills
  • Ability to travel

Appointment term length

Most Cabinet appointments to regulated marketing boards and commissions are for two-year terms. Appointments can be extended.
